Blog Prospecting on LinkedIn

LinkedIn prospecting

By PortifyLead · Updated 30 September 2026
Quick answer

LinkedIn prospecting is finding and reaching out to potential buyers on LinkedIn, the first stage of the sales cycle in LinkedIn’s own glossary. A free account can message only first-degree connections and up to three personalized connection notes a month; everyone else needs an InMail credit, and every Sales Navigator plan gives 50 a month. Checked 28 September 2026.

PortifyLead saves the LinkedIn profile you are viewing to your CRM, and turns an existing one-to-one conversation into an AI Sales Brief when you ask for one. So we read LinkedIn’s own prospecting, messaging and search rules for what they actually mean to a seller doing this work.

What is LinkedIn prospecting?

LinkedIn defines sales prospecting as the first stage of the sales cycle: identifying and connecting with potential buyers, the people it calls prospects. Its own glossary gives five steps: learn the company, read the person’s career page, use Sales Navigator to find them, work out the best way to reach them, and follow up.

LinkedIn adds that a high-value prospect can be worth as many as five touch points, spaced roughly every other business day, before you move on. That is a cadence, not a hard rule, and it assumes each touch gives the person a reason to respond, not a repeat of the last message.

How do you find the right people to prospect on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn search supports Boolean operators: quotation marks for an exact phrase, parentheses to group terms, and NOT, AND and OR, typed in capitals and evaluated in that order. A search such as "vp sales" AND (fintech OR payments) NOT recruiter narrows a broad title down to the accounts that matter.

Curly braces, square brackets, angle brackets and the asterisk wildcard are not supported, and LinkedIn ignores short stop words such as “by,” “in” and “with” even inside quotes. Plus and minus signs are not officially supported either, so a search built around them is guesswork, not a documented feature.

From a relevant prospect to a recorded next step

Illustrative seller scenario, not a customer result: you sell onboarding software to small accounting firms. A firm hiring its first operations manager is a reason to investigate, not proof that it needs your product.

  1. Check the firm’s website and the person’s current role. Keep the prospect if onboarding is part of their remit; exclude a recruiter hiring on someone else’s behalf.
  2. Choose a permitted contact route: a message to an existing connection, a relevant introduction, or InMail. Write the relevance signal in your notes before contacting them.
  3. For an existing connection, an example opening is: ‘Your operations-manager vacancy mentions client onboarding. Are transfers between the sales and delivery teams part of that work? We build onboarding software for accounting firms.’ This is illustrative wording, not a tested response-rate claim.
  4. Save the profile and record the source, reason for fit and contact date. If using PortifyLead, review the captured values and resolve the duplicate check on save. A conversation is not required for contact capture.
  5. If the prospect replies that those transfers are being reviewed next month, record that timing and agree a next step. An AI Sales Brief can help summarize an existing conversation; review it before saving and leave unsupported details as not detected.
  6. Follow up on the agreed date with something relevant to the stated problem. Record the outcome, and stop outreach when the person declines. PortifyLead does not send the message for you.

How many people can you message for free on LinkedIn?

A free account can message first-degree connections and anyone in a shared group at no cost, plus send up to three personalized notes on connection requests a month, each capped at 200 characters. Reaching someone outside that circle needs either their Open Profile setting, which lets any member message them for free, or an InMail credit, which only a paid plan provides.

Free accounts also carry a commercial use limit: LinkedIn caps profile searches, “People also viewed” browsing and the People tab on Company pages once activity looks like prospecting, and resets it at midnight Pacific on the 1st of the month. Premium Business, Recruiter Lite and Sales Navigator remove the cap.

What should a LinkedIn prospecting message actually say?

LinkedIn caps a connection note at 200 characters, an InMail subject at 200 and an InMail body at 2,000, and its own guidance for InMail is to keep the message to about 50 to 75 words and put the important words first in the subject line, since mobile often cuts it off at 30 to 40 characters. A subject that only makes sense once the message is fully open is a subject most prospects never read.

There is no wording that fits every account, and LinkedIn’s advice is closer to timing than to phrasing: for someone new in a role, a message sent in week three or four often lands better than one sent on day one, once they have had time to settle in and start looking for the tools the job needs.

How do you follow up on LinkedIn without it looking like spam?

Space it out. LinkedIn restricts invitations when a member sends many in a short time, when a lot get ignored or marked as spam, or when it suspects automation, and a restriction usually lifts within a week with no way to request an early lift. A withdrawn invitation cannot go to the same person again for up to three weeks, so a follow-up is a reason to wait, not a reason to resend faster.

On a first-degree connection, or an InMail thread that got a reply, you can message again any time. What you cannot do is send a second InMail before the first one is accepted and answered — that is the practical limit on chasing an unanswered prospect: one InMail is the whole opening move until they reply.

When do you need InMail, and what does it cost?

You need InMail the moment you want to message someone who is not a first-degree connection, not in a shared group, and has not turned on Open Profile. Premium Career gives 5 InMail credits a month, Premium Business 15, and every Sales Navigator plan 50, with unused credits carried up to three months’ worth; a credit comes back automatically if the person accepts, declines or answers within 90 days.

Sales Navigator’s three tiers all give the same 50 credits: Core is US$119.99 a month, Advanced US$159.99, and Advanced Plus is custom-priced. LinkedIn’s native CRM Sync requires Advanced Plus, according to its feature-specific help documentation checked 30 September 2026. Third-party contact capture is a separate workflow, not access to native CRM Sync. If InMail volume is the only reason you are comparing plans, Core buys as many credits as the pricier tiers do — our guide to LinkedIn InMail credits goes deeper on renewal and rollover, and our guide to what LinkedIn Sales Navigator costs covers the rest of what the tiers add.

Does the LinkedIn Social Selling Index actually matter?

LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index scores every account from 0 to 100 across four elements: building a professional brand, finding the right people, sharing insights, and building relationships, checked at linkedin.com/sales/ssi. It is a live number, free to check on any account, Premium or not.

LinkedIn itself now says a high score does not always represent a seller’s actual effectiveness. Treat SSI as a diagnostic of where your LinkedIn activity is thin, not a target to chase for its own sake — a rep who closes deals without much LinkedIn brand-building can carry a mediocre SSI and a full pipeline.

What we see in the field: prospecting produces a conversation, and the conversation is what is worth saving

Everything above happens before PortifyLead is involved: finding the person, sending the note or InMail, and however many follow-ups it takes to get a reply. Once there is a reply and you are back on the person’s profile or Sales Navigator lead page, saving them to your CRM is one action, and PortifyLead checks for a duplicate at that point rather than while you browse.

When the conversation gives you something to work with, an AI Sales Brief pulls needs, timing, blockers, stakeholders, authority and decision process from that one-to-one thread, reviewable before anything writes to the CRM. With no conversation yet, it saves the profile only and says so; it does not guess.

Questions

Is LinkedIn prospecting free?

Yes for messaging first-degree connections and sending up to three connection notes a month. Reaching anyone else needs their Open Profile setting or a paid InMail credit.

Can you automate LinkedIn prospecting?

LinkedIn’s User Agreement forbids bots or other unauthorized automated methods to access the service, add contacts, or send messages, and its Help Center says the same for browser extensions that scrape or automate activity; accounts using them risk restriction. PortifyLead’s capture is a manual, one-profile-at-a-time action you trigger — it does not send messages or automate invitations.

What is the difference between prospecting and social selling?

Prospecting is finding and connecting with specific buyers, the first stage of a sale. Social selling is the ongoing brand-building and relationship work, sharing insights and engaging, that LinkedIn describes as supporting it, not a separate activity.

How many LinkedIn connection requests can you send in a week?

LinkedIn does not publish a number. It restricts invitations that look automated or draw many ignores instead of naming a weekly cap, and a restriction usually lifts within a week.

Does PortifyLead send InMail or connection requests for me?

No. PortifyLead saves the contact you are viewing and, once a conversation exists, can turn it into an AI Sales Brief — it does not send LinkedIn messages. It has a Free plan with 15 saves a month, 5 of them with a brief, and Pro is $15 a month.

Turn a LinkedIn reply into a CRM record, not another tab.

PortifyLead saves the person you are prospecting to Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho CRM, Pipedrive, Capsule or a spreadsheet, and can add an AI Sales Brief once you have a conversation with them. You review every value before anything saves.
